A new home for econ students @ SFSU Welcome to the new website for the Economics
Students Association (ESA)! As a growing student organization, our
primary aim is to bring economics students at San Francisco State
University together with faculty, employers, academic resources,
tutoring, and of course, eachother. We have added functionality to
this site in an effort to create a centralized hub of community and
resources for students studying economics at SFSU. We highly encourage
you to register a new account
(all are welcome), create a profile, and begin to explore some of the
various features of this site as well as participate in the forums and ESA meetings and events. Please visit our calendar
to see the most recent events and announcements. Registered users can
submit relevant weblinks as well as build networks with other users and
post in personal user blogs and the site forumsplus so much more!! Any questions can be emailed to

The ESA is starting up again! My name is Felix Sargent, some of you might have met me, others, maybe not. I'm the British guy who talks too much in class. Well, I figure I should put all that talkative energy into something productive, and figured we should get the ESA up and running again. I first heard of the Economics Student Association while I was studying at College of Marin. I saw the ESA had a "Tour the Federal Reserve" event up on Facebook, and inquired. Despite not being a SFSU student at the time, the ESA welcomed me on the tour - and it was a grand old time. I want to get that happening again. I will need all of your help in finding good events, having competitions, and organizing everyone. If you're interested, have any neat ideas, or just want to bug me, please e-mail me at felix.sargent AT gmail.com . We should hold elections soon also, so that we can have a strong organization. More information on that forthcoming. A few events I think might be a possibility: Short Film Competition (Create anything about Economics, especially weird, freakonomic movies) Cupcakes (Everyone loves cupcakes) Specially organized lectures by some of our favorite teachers Tours of the FED, and hopefully other financial institutions And hopefully in the future, speakers.

A Freakonomics Contest: The Coase Theorem Online
By Steven D. Levitt
Freakonomics schwag
is up for offer at the end of this post. As such, it may actually be
worth slogging through the brief economics lesson that follows.
The Coase Theorem
is a somewhat rare species of beast: an economic theory that is both
completely counterintuitive and yet often right in practice. The idea
is named after Ronald Coase,
one of the University of Chicago’s many Nobel Laureate economists.
Nearing the age of 100, he may not hear quite as well as he used to,
but otherwise he is still going strong, sitting on the Board of
Directors of the Becker Center, giving lectures, writing academic articles, and attending the occasional seminar.)
